Levi Casboult announced his retirement earlier this week after playing 198 games over 15 years with Carlton and the Gold Coast.
The key forward, who was taken with pick 44 in the 2010 Rookie Draft, made his debut in 2012 and played 154 games for the Blues before being delisted at the end of the 2021 season.
He kicked 156 goals during his time in navy blue and was the club’s leading goalkicker in 2017 (34 goals).
The Suns swooped and took “Big Meat” with pick 3 in the 2022 Rookie Draft, with Casboult playing 44 games over three years for the club, kicking a further 59 goals.
I was sad to see Levi delisted in 2021, and I’m sad to see him retire. While he certainly some “interesting” moments on the field, he had a thumping kick, had great hands in a marking contest, and loved a good celebration.
Casboult is the thirteenth player to finish his career on 198 games, joining the likes of Billy Brownless, Tom Harley, and Liam Picken. Jake Kolodjashnij is the only active player to sit on 198 games and will presumably add to this total in 2025.
Casboult became the second ‘Levi’ to play in the V/AFL, following former Kangaroo and Magpie Levi Greenwood, who played 160 games between 2008 and 2021.
Greenwood, who was a midfielder, kicked fewer goals (57) and had fewer hit outs (15 compared to Casboult’s 1021) but had more disposals (2696 versus 1870), tackles (683 versus 321), and Brownlow votes (nine compared to two).
Fans of the name won’t be left waiting for long, with the Brisbane Lions set to take Levi Ashcroft as a father-son selection in the National Draft next month.
